What to Expect

Permaculture meets ceramics in the low-wood, low-emission firing technology of the Rocket Kiln—an alternative atmospheric firing led by nationally recognized ceramic artist Lisa Orr. In this immersive two-day workshop, we’ll build and fire a wood-fired Rocket Kiln from start to finish, wood-fire our own pieces, and learn through hands-on experience. Both days will begin as scheduled below and continue until the work is complete. Please bring a sack lunch. Participants are also invited to join us for a quick kiln unload on the third day, though you are welcome to pick up your pieces from the studio if you cannot attend. Schedule: Monday, April 20: Kiln Assembly (9:00 AM) Tuesday, April 21: Firing (9:00 AM) Wednesday, April 22: Optional pick-up (10:00 AM) Good to Know ✅ Limited to the first 15 participants. ✅ Workshop will take place at a location different from the studio. Address provided upon registration. ✅ Please bring a sack lunch, water, and snacks. ✅ Each participant may bring up to 3 bisque-fired pieces, no larger than 3” × 5”. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate larger work. ✅ We are firing to ^10. You can stop by Savor Ceramics the week prior to the workshop to glaze. We will have a limited amount of ^10 options...or you can glaze them on your own. ✅ Pieces will be available for pickup at Savor Ceramics if you cannot come on Wednesday morning. What is a Rocket Kiln? A wood-fired Rocket Kiln is an alternative atmospheric firing method inspired by rocket stove technology. An old electric kiln is paired with an efficiently designed firing chamber that uses one-fourth or less of the fuel typically required for a traditional wood firing. Temperatures up to △10 can be reached in just a few hours. Because it produces little visible smoke, a rocket kiln can be fired in places like urban driveways, art centers, or off-grid studios.
